Lazy Bones, Feb. 17, 18, 19, 2017

Monday, March 6th, 2017

Our annual Lazy Bones camp out gives the Scouts a weekend to relax and have some “lazy” fun. We spend most of the weekend in a cabin, playing video games and board games. The weather this year was nice, so we also spent time playing games outside and taking a hike. Lazy Bones is a reward for working hard the rest of the year. Before a Scout can attend Lazy Bones, he must attend a minimum of 75% of the monthly campouts and demonstrate mastery of basic scout skills. It goes without saying that Lazy Bones is one of our most popular activities!

Klondike Derby, Jan. 27, 28, 29, 2017

Monday, February 27th, 2017

The Klondike Derby takes place every winter. Scout Troops from all over Northeast Ohio gather at Camp Manatoc for camping, competition, and camaraderie.

The theme for this year’s Klondike was “Mad Max: Flurry Road”. The scouts built sleds to transport their equipment around the camp. The rotated between stations where they completed a wide range of challenges and earned points. The stations consisted of Map & Compass, First Aid, Fire Building, Knots, an other essential skills. There was also a sled race.

At the end of the day, points were totaled and the scouts gathered around a large fire. The troops could use their points to enter a raffle for various prizes. Winners received coupons for Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza, toys, coolers, and camping gear. Everyone went home a winner.

Thanksgiving in the Woods Nov. 14, 15, 16, 2016

Monday, February 27th, 2017

Thanksgiving in the Woods gives us all a chance to feast and give thanks together. Our Scouts spend the weekend at Camp Manatoc preparing a traditional Thanksgiving meal for our families. It also gives our families a chance to come out and participate in the Scouting Experience.

We prepared several turkeys, garlic mashed potatoes, vegetables, and desserts. It was a little muddy, but the weather could not have been better!

Scout Sunday 2-5-2017

Thursday, February 16th, 2017

A Scout is Reverent.

Scout Sunday allows our troop the opportunity to show our appreciation to our hosts at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Stow. Troop 273 has been been with St. Stephen Church for over 50 years. During Scout Sunday, our Scouts serve as greeters and ushers for both morning services.

Our Scouts even participated by reading from Scripture during the service.

This Scout Sunday we were very pleased to witness the presentation of the Servant of Youth Award to our very own Stephen Hodges. Mr Hodges has actively served both the Church and the Boy Scouts of America for more than 10 years.

To receive the Servant of Youth Award, the recipient must:

1. Be an active member of a Lutheran congregation OR be an active member of another Christian congregation who serves Lutheran young people through a civic youth agency affiliated with a Lutheran congregation.

2. Have a minimum of five years of service to the church.

3. Have a minimum of five years of service to one or more civic youth agencies (BSA, GSUSA, AHG, CFUSA, 4- H).

4. Be one whose Christian lifestyle is a model for young people.

5. Encourage young people to participate in the spiritual growth opportunities in their congregations.

6. Promote the religious growth programs to young people.

7. Recruit adult volunteers, especially Lutherans, to give leadership to civic youth agency programs.

8. Be fully trained in his/her area of responsibility.

9. Reflect one’s Christian faith and the position of his/her church body in discussions and meetings of the civic youth agency at every level at which he/she is involved.

Congratulations Mr. Hodges, and thank you for your dedication and continued service!

Weekly Meeting 1-30-2017

Wednesday, February 8th, 2017

At this week’s meeting, we held elections for The Order of the Arrow (OA). The OA is the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. For more than 90 years, the Order of the Arrow has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.

To be eligible, Scouts must meet certain minimum requirements. Then, worthy nominees are elected by their peers. This year, Troop 273 voted for 2 of our Scouts to the OA.

The remainder of our meeting was spent working on our tickets for our “Lazy Bones” campout. During Lazy Bones, We stay in a nice warm cabin and play video games, board games, go on hikes, and celebrate the past year together. Before anyone can attend Lazy Bones, they must complete a ticket. The ticket is used to ensure the Scouts have mastered certain basic skills, retained foundational knowledge required of all Scouts, and are adequately prepared for the year ahead.

Weekly Meeting 1-16-2017

Sunday, January 22nd, 2017

We started this week’s meeting by planning our meals for our upcoming campout. We have to decide what to eat for each meal so we can buy all the right ingredients, and make sure we have enough for everyone.

We also split up into small groups and practiced our skills. We have been working on signaling with signal flags.

We also practiced orienting our maps using a compass. This will help us navigate on our hikes.

We finished up by playing a game. Sorry we don’t have any pictures, but we were playing in the dark!

Weekly Meeting 1-9-2017

Wednesday, January 11th, 2017

This week was our first meeting in the new year. We had a good holiday break and we are ready to get back to our regular routine.

We started our meeting, as usual, by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, The Scout Oath, and The Scout Law. Then, we helped our hosts at St. Stephen Lutheran Church by putting away Christmas decorations.

The majority of this meeting was spent in small groups, practicing our skills. The older scouts teach the younger scouts and pass on their knowledge.

We reviewed fire building techniques, including Flint & Steel and using Steel Wool and a 9 volt battery.

We practiced tying knots.

We also practiced setting up our 2-man and 3-man tents.

The final skills station was First-Aid.

It was good to see everyone again after our holiday break. We are all looking forward to the upcoming Klondike Derby.

Winter Camping Dec. 9, 10, 11, 2016

Thursday, December 22nd, 2016

For our December Campout, we went to Beaumont Scout Reservation in Rock Creek, Ohio.

We had a great time, even though the temperatures were in low 20’s and high teens. Friday night, after we got to camp, about 10 inches of snow fell, leaving a total of about 20 inches of snow on the ground. We were lucky to stay in Adirondack Shelters.

On Saturday, we warmed up with oatmeal and fruit for breakfast. Then, we all participated in a 2 mile GPS Navigation course. It took us most of the day, due to the knee-deep snow!

Saturday night, we all had a great time playing games and telling stories around the campfire.

The big hit of the weekend had to be stopping for breakfast at The Pasta Oven in Rock Creek on the way home Sunday morning. Hot food after a cold weekend really hit the spot!

Weekly Meeting 12-19-2016

Thursday, December 22nd, 2016

This week, we continued planning for the upcoming Klondike Derby. We reviewed what gear we all need to bring to keep us warm and dry. We also started going through our Patrol Boxes and inventorying our cooking gear.

The rest of the meeting was spent practicing our lashings. Lashing is using rope to join 2 things together, usually sticks or poles of some kind. Lashings can be used to build shelters, rope bridges and other useful things. Tonight, we made sleds. these types of sleds could be used to transport equipment or an injured person.

At the end of the meeting, we had a great time racing our sleds.

Philmont Scout Ranch, 2014

Sunday, December 18th, 2016

In the summer of 2014, our scouts made the trip to The Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.

Philmont is scouting’s premiere high adventure base. Our scouts hiked over 50 total miles during the week, while carrying all of their food and equipment!

A scout must be at least 14 years old and demonstrate mastery of all important skills before attending a high adventure camp. We had a great time and made memories that will last a life time.
