Weekly Meeting 1-30-2017

Wednesday, February 8th, 2017

At this week’s meeting, we held elections for The Order of the Arrow (OA). The OA is the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. For more than 90 years, the Order of the Arrow has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.

To be eligible, Scouts must meet certain minimum requirements. Then, worthy nominees are elected by their peers. This year, Troop 273 voted for 2 of our Scouts to the OA.

The remainder of our meeting was spent working on our tickets for our “Lazy Bones” campout. During Lazy Bones, We stay in a nice warm cabin and play video games, board games, go on hikes, and celebrate the past year together. Before anyone can attend Lazy Bones, they must complete a ticket. The ticket is used to ensure the Scouts have mastered certain basic skills, retained foundational knowledge required of all Scouts, and are adequately prepared for the year ahead.

Weekly Meeting 1-16-2017

Sunday, January 22nd, 2017

We started this week’s meeting by planning our meals for our upcoming campout. We have to decide what to eat for each meal so we can buy all the right ingredients, and make sure we have enough for everyone.

We also split up into small groups and practiced our skills. We have been working on signaling with signal flags.

We also practiced orienting our maps using a compass. This will help us navigate on our hikes.

We finished up by playing a game. Sorry we don’t have any pictures, but we were playing in the dark!

Weekly Meeting 1-9-2017

Wednesday, January 11th, 2017

This week was our first meeting in the new year. We had a good holiday break and we are ready to get back to our regular routine.

We started our meeting, as usual, by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, The Scout Oath, and The Scout Law. Then, we helped our hosts at St. Stephen Lutheran Church by putting away Christmas decorations.

The majority of this meeting was spent in small groups, practicing our skills. The older scouts teach the younger scouts and pass on their knowledge.

We reviewed fire building techniques, including Flint & Steel and using Steel Wool and a 9 volt battery.

We practiced tying knots.

We also practiced setting up our 2-man and 3-man tents.

The final skills station was First-Aid.

It was good to see everyone again after our holiday break. We are all looking forward to the upcoming Klondike Derby.

Weekly Meeting 12-19-2016

Thursday, December 22nd, 2016

This week, we continued planning for the upcoming Klondike Derby. We reviewed what gear we all need to bring to keep us warm and dry. We also started going through our Patrol Boxes and inventorying our cooking gear.

The rest of the meeting was spent practicing our lashings. Lashing is using rope to join 2 things together, usually sticks or poles of some kind. Lashings can be used to build shelters, rope bridges and other useful things. Tonight, we made sleds. these types of sleds could be used to transport equipment or an injured person.

At the end of the meeting, we had a great time racing our sleds.

Weekly Meeting 12-12-2016

Thursday, December 15th, 2016

We started our meeting in the usual way. We recite the Pledge of Allegiance, The Scout Oath, and The Scout Law. Then, our Senior Patrol Leader tells everyone the plan for the meeting.

We went over the plan for the upcoming Klondike Derby at Camp Manatoc. The theme this year is “Mad Max, Flurry Road”. We will build a sled for different competitions at camp.

We also reviewed our skills for winter camping. We reviewed first aid for frostbite and hypothermia. We went over proper prior planning to ensure we have all the equipment and gear to make sure we are warm and safe.

Finally, we played a game that helped us practice our knot tying. Each patrol tied short pieces of rope together and used them to “rescue” other members of our troop. The knots we used were mostly square knots and the bowline.

Weekly Meeting 12-5-2016

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

This week, we started our meeting in the usual way. First, we recite the Pledge of Allegiance, The Scout Oath, and The Scout Law. Then, our Senior Patrol Leader tells everyone the plan for the meeting.

This week, we were happy to have Sara Kline, the Mayor of Stow, join us. Mayor Kline spoke with the entire troop. She taught us a little bit about how our city government works and the responsibilities of the Mayor. In Stow, the Mayor is also the City Safety Director. That means Mayor Kline is also responsible for our Police and Fire Departments.

Mayor Kline taught us a few fun facts about the city of Stow. With 35,000 residents, Stow is the 3rd largest city in Summit County. Stow also has the 2nd largest school district in the county, behind only Akron.

Finally, Mayor Kline talked with our Scouts about what it means to be a responsible citizen and how we can all help to better our community. She answered our questions and generously gave us all pins for our uniforms, featuring the official seal of the City of Stow.

We finished off our meeting by playing a quick game and having some Christmas cookies that were donated by our hosts at St. Stephen Lutheran Church.

We had a fun and educational night! We would especially like to thank Mayor Kline for her time and the pins.
